05 February, 2018
Canal Chair by Luca Nichetto

Pitch

Mainly docked around a table in the manner of a moored boat, Luca Nichetto's Canal Chair is inspired by a historical type of ship that dominated the Mediterranean waterways for centuries. Standing proud, with its back resembling the bow of a boat displaying timeless compositions of subtle tone-on-tone hues, or bolder colour-play combinations.

Quotes

I think it's a super interesting idea to design an archetypal chair that's so nearly the archetype of a boat. It's a beautiful thing - especially because Nichetto has made it work so well.

Marcel Wanders words about the Canal Chair by Luca Nichetto for Moooi
‘A lot of the products Moooi present make you look at an object in a different way. Luca Nichetto is closely connected to the Venetian area. The way he translated the idea of a boat into the Canal chair is quite remarkable. I think it’s a super interesting idea to design an archetypal chair that’s so nearly the archetype of a boat. It’s a beautiful thing – especially because Nichetto’s made it work so well. Imagine a set of these chairs around a table, as if they’re in a harbour. They could live in bars, in restaurants, in your home – it’s a world unknown. We want to work more with this idea in the future. Think of the colours, the lines, names on the hull. What’s on the backs of today’s chairs? Nothing. But transplanting ideas from the nautical world to the world of chairs could lead to a new culture.’

Five years later, in 2011, Nichetto opened a second studio in Stockholm, Sweden. This practice was founded in response to an ever-growing number of requests for collaboration from international companies, with the studio’s work also broadening out from its initial focus on designed objects.

Nichetto Studio has since expanded into areas such as interior design and architecture. Today, Nichetto Studio works with a variety of brands and clients from all around the world, and its expertise is sought out across all design disciplines.

A deep passion for, and knowledge of, industrial and craft manufacturing processes runs through every aspect of the studio’s work.
