Interior design brand Moooi, celebrated for its bold, playful and elegant designs, opens a new showroom and brand store in Tokyo Metropolis in collaboration with high end interiors retail company Toyo Kitchen Style.
Angles & Facts
- Moooi International: Moooi’s Tokyo Showroom & Brand Store will be the brand’s fourth, after Amsterdam (opened in 2008), New York (opened in 2015), and London (opened earlier in June 2016)
- Care to dance? Marcel Wanders’ Charleston Sofa, our dancing partner from this year’s Milan presentation, will make its international debut at Moooi’s Tokyo Showroom & Brand Store. Charleston actually stands on its side as if enthralled in a dynamic dance.
- History in the making: Japan and The Netherlands share a unique historical exchange. The opening of Moooi’s Tokyo Showroom & Brand Store, a Dutch based international design company, in Tokyo in 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the 1616 trade agreement between the Japanese and the Dutch.
- A very central location: Moooi makes itself at home in Aoyama in the heart of the Japanese capital. One of the most popular entertainment and shopping areas for Tokyo’s creative community. We could not have wished for a better spot!

Moooi travels far to deliver its Unexpected Welcome to the capital of Japan
June 2016 - Interior design brand Moooi, celebrated for its bold, playful and elegant designs, opens a new showroom and brand store in Tokyo Metropolis in collaboration with high end interiors retail company Toyo Kitchen Style.
We are thrilled by Moooi’s recognition and appreciation in Japan. Today we are proud to bring the Moooi brand to the next level with our esteemed partner Toyo Kitchen Style, comments Moooi CEO Robin Bevers.
Located in the southern area of the Aoyama (i.e. Blue Mountain) neighbourhood, Minami Aoyama extends to the northern edge of Roppongi, Azabu and Hiroo. Formerly home to picturesque temples, shrines and revered samurai residences, it is now known as one of the most popular entertainment and shopping areas for young urban professionals. Fashion, design and architecture lovers gather in this part of the city to seek inspiration.
Moooi’s collection takes residence near recognizable landmarks such as the Spiral Building, with its galleries, restaurants bars and shops, not far from the exclusive Prada Aoyama and Cartier boutiques. Both international and Japanese fashion brands prosper in this neighbourhood, where unique architecture meets tradition with subtle flair. Successful businesses such as Louis Vuitton Japan and Sony have their headquarters here.
The showroom and brand store occupies a total of 270m² of the first and second floor at Three F 6-11-1 Minamiaoyama Minato-ku. The exquisite interior showcases Moooi’s signature furniture and lighting collection, lifestyle ideas, and a selection of the brand-new design pieces debuted at the 2016 furniture fair in Milan. An assortment of carpets and broadlooms with surprising three-dimensional patterns add another layer of beauty and depth to the inspiring interior, beautifully complementing the overall experience.
The store will welcome design lovers and passers-by with its air of rebellious harmony and eccentric twist; unexpectedly provocative and indulgently poetic. It will embody the complete Moooi experience, reflecting the brand’s unique style and utter dedication to beauty.
The lighting collection includes acclaimed signature pieces such as Bertjan Pot’s versatile Prop Lights, transparent bubbles of effervescent light, as well as Raimond Put’s Raimond lamp, a constellation of tiny LED lights where geometry and poetry merge in a perfect sphere of light. The latest extension of Bertjan Pot’s Heracleum design, Heracleum Endless, crowns the Moooi space with jovial branches and ramifications of LED leaves.
Among the furniture collection on display, some pieces stand out for their daringness and eccentricity. One of them is certainly Marcel Wander’s Charleston, a free-spirited sofa that stands on its side enraptured in a dynamic dance, while a gang of rounded, softly embroidered Monster Chairs show their dark side in a meeting of monstrous importance.
Almost all the furniture pieces stand on carpets from Moooi’s signature collection, a selection of worlds with inspiring 3D effects and photo-realistic prints. Marcel Wanders’ broadloom Fool’s Paradise, with its rich colouring and decadent bouquet of wilting flowers, mesmerises with its detailed patterns.
The Moooi showroom and brand store will be a multi-layered experience enclosing diverse worlds, where beauty rules and inspiration may blossom in unexpected directions.
