Introducing Urchina Light by Studio Roderick Vos: a floating constellation inspired by the intelligence of nature. Combining delicate carbon fibre rods with hidden engineering, Urchina transforms the symmetry of sea urchins into a light that feels alive in space, shifting gently between sculptural expression and warm atmosphere.

INSPIRED BY NATURE'S RHYTHM

For Roderick Vos, Urchina began with two moments that happened decades apart.

The first was as a child, snorkelling in the waters of Indonesia, fascinated by sea urchins resting on the seabed. Their perfect symmetry, radiating structure and effortless logic stayed with him long after those memories faded.

The second came unexpectedly inside a factory. While handling an ultra-thin carbon fibre rod, Vos realised it could carry low voltage. Suddenly, those childhood memories returned. The structure of a sea urchin no longer belonged underwater; it could become a light.

Urchina Light grew from the meeting of those two ideas: nature's intelligence and modern engineering.

DESIGNED TO FEEL EFFORTLESS

Nature rarely wastes energy. Every form has a purpose and every detail contributes to the whole. Urchina Light mimics nature and follows the same principle.

Over two and a half years, the design was refined through countless prototypes, gradually removing complexity until only the essential remained. Slender carbon fibre rods extend from a hidden central core, each carrying a point of light that appears to float effortlessly in space. The result feels remarkably simple, although its engineering is anything but.

As Vos describes it, the ambition was to create something that "looks almost like it hasn't been designed."

EXPRESSION BY DAY, ATMOSPHERE BY NIGHT

Urchina Light changes with the rhythm of the day.

In daylight, its sculptural form takes centre stage. The delicate carbon rods create an intricate silhouette that appears almost weightless, gently responding to the movement of air and the life around it. Installed individually or in clusters, Urchina  Light brings movement into a space, echoing the natural rhythm that inspired its design.

As evening falls, the experience shifts. The structure gradually fades into the background, while the light itself comes forward. A hidden downlight provides warm, functional illumination below, while a soft upward glow adds depth and atmosphere. It is this transition that fascinated Vos most: a light that feels expressive when the sun is up and almost disappears when the room is lit only by its glow.

DESIGNED FOR A LIFETIME

Urchina Light was designed with the belief that exceptional objects should remain part of our lives for years to come.

Its modular construction allows each carbon rod to be assembled individually, making installation both practical and engaging. The same thoughtful approach continues throughout the product. Individual rods can be replaced if needed without dismantling the entire fixture, making maintenance straightforward and extending the life of the design.

The process of assembling Urchina also creates a more personal relationship with the object. As each element finds its place, the light slowly reveals itself—not simply as something to own, but as something to participate in.

A COLLABORATION WITH MOOOI

Bringing Urchina Light to life was a journey shared between Studio Roderick Vos and the Moooi product development team.

Together, they challenged every detail, refining the design through years of prototyping, testing and discussion. Every adjustment moved Urchina closer to its essential form, balancing technical innovation with the effortless simplicity that defines the final design.

The result is a light that feels remarkably natural. One that carries the logic of nature, the precision of engineering and the warmth of human craftsmanship in equal measure.

Designed with the logic of nature, Urchina Light invites us to experience light not as something fixed, but as something living.
